The objective of our opening sequence was to create an immense amount of mystery and suspense to keep the audience wanting to know what happens next. Sound, whether it be diegetic or non-diegetic, plays as much as a big part in creating suspense and mystery as good writing and direction does. Sound, when used perfectly, can incredibly amplify the effect of a scene. Mystery and suspenseful movies mainly use slow and ominous music to build suspense. We've done exactly that, I believe. The music slowly creeps in at the start and melds in with the chirping of the birds.
As the boy is getting up and walking towards the bodies the music is slowly getting louder creating suspense. I think the score within the scene makes it a nail-biting experience. The score and the noises of the birds chirping are both diegetic and so is the main character saying "Hello" and breathing hard when he wakes up, all the sound within the opening sequence is diagetic. We felt this was necessary because the sound we recorded whilst on-set shooting the video was not usable. We couldn't re-shoot and get the perfect sound because that would've been very time consuming and thought editing in sound was the best option.
